Personal Reflections: Big Dreams, Small Decisions, and the Weight of Responsibility

From Brilliant Ideas to Shopping Lists
I want to write a book called Writing a Brilliant Prompt. In this book, I’d write a brilliant prompt – as I always do – and then analyze its brilliance. I’d even use AI to analyze the brilliance, cracking open artificial intelligence with its capabilities. It would be the most brilliant book ever written.

But the brilliance has to wait. There are errands to run, and shopping to do. Walmart and Dollarama await.

We’re okay with second-hand. Dreaming of being rich while pinching pennies. Dreaming big dreams while getting stuck in the mud of daily life. If there’s no bread, let them eat cake. And if there’s no soup, let them drink pop. Open my fridge, and that’s what you’ll find. Pop and wine.

This isn’t a bachelor pad, though. My partner depends on me; she doesn’t have a license. The fridge looks like whatever I decide it should look like. But I’m not good at these kinds of decisions. Neither is she. And it’s not just the license – it’s something more. She’s childish, like me. Maybe that’s good. But this “good” is heavy, wrapped in guilt.

Practical Tips: Managing Daily Life and Emotional Struggles as an Immigrant

  • Don’t Let Errands Overwhelm the Bigger Picture
It’s easy to feel bogged down by the endless tasks that come with settling into a new country. Break down the list into manageable priorities and focus on one task at a time. Remember, completing the mundane is part of building stability for those bigger dreams.
  • Balance Budgeting with Small Indulgences
Living frugally is often necessary during the early stages of immigration, but allowing yourself small indulgences – a favorite drink, a comforting meal – can ease the feeling of deprivation and bring moments of joy into the routine.
  • Share Responsibilities with Your Partner
When one partner feels solely responsible for decisions like shopping or meal planning, resentment can build. Share these tasks to balance the load. If a lack of driving privileges is a barrier, work together on alternative solutions, such as using public transit or car-sharing services.
  • Accept Flaws as Part of the Journey
Feeling “childish” or inadequate is a natural reaction to the stress of uprooting your life. Acknowledge these feelings, but don’t let guilt overshadow your progress. Celebrate the fact that you’re taking steps – even small ones – toward building a life together.
  • Keep the Dream Alive Amid Routine
While daily tasks can feel endless, find time to nurture your dreams. Whether it’s writing that book or pursuing a passion project, carving out even a few minutes each day for your goals keeps you connected to your purpose.

Immigration is a constant balancing act between the immediate and the aspirational. From grocery shopping to grand ideas, every small decision and dream plays a role in shaping your new life. Allow yourself grace as you navigate these dual realities, knowing that each step forward – no matter how small – is a part of your journey.
